At Wirral Flower Farm, we’re passionate about bringing people closer to nature, especially through the art of growing beautiful blooms. Our Seeds to Stems course is designed to take you through every stage of cultivating your very own cut flower patch, providing you with hands-on experience and expert guidance each month. By the end, you’ll not only have a garden filled with vibrant flowers but also the skills to keep it thriving year after year.
Here’s a sneak peek at what each month of Seeds to Stems has in store for you in 2025:
May: Planting Out & Direct Sowing
As the days warm, it’s time to get hands dirty again. This month, you’ll be planting out hardy seedlings and direct-sowing annuals that prefer the soil. We’ll discuss spacing, pest protection, and mulching to keep weeds at bay. By the end of May, your patch will be on its way to becoming a sea of green shoots and buds!
June: Maintenance & Early Harvest
June is when your flower patch truly begins to flourish. We’ll focus on garden maintenance, covering watering techniques, weeding, and supporting plants as they grow. This month, you may even get your first harvest of early-blooming flowers like sweet peas. We’ll discuss when and how to cut flowers to promote continuous blooming.
July: Harvesting & Arranging
By July, your flower patch should be brimming with blooms. In this session, you’ll learn how to harvest at the ideal time for longevity, and we’ll cover flower conditioning to ensure your blooms last in the vase. We’ll also dive into the basics of flower arranging, showing you how to create beautiful, hand-tied bouquets.
August: Succession Planting & Seed Collection
August is a month of abundance, but we’ll also think ahead to keep the garden productive. You’ll learn about succession planting for a late-summer harvest and how to collect seeds from your best flowers to sow next year. We’ll discuss drying and preserving flowers, so you can enjoy them long after the season ends.
September: Preparing for Autumn & Bulb Planting
As the growing season winds down, we shift our focus to autumn preparation. We’ll cover how to tidy up your patch, manage spent plants, and enrich your soil for winter. This is also the perfect time to plant spring bulbs, like daffodils and tulips, which will bring early color to your garden next year.
October: Extending the Season & Putting the Garden to Bed
October marks the final chapter of Seeds to Stems, but there’s still plenty to do! We’ll talk about late-season blooms, cold frames, and other ways to extend the season. You’ll also learn how to put your garden to bed, preparing it for winter so that it’s ready to flourish again next spring.
By joining Seeds to Stems, you’ll gain the confidence and skills to cultivate a garden that’s a source of joy, beauty, and cut flowers. Each month, you’ll be surrounded by others who share your passion and have the support of expert guidance. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to deepen your gardening knowledge, Seeds to Stems will be a memorable journey from seed to bloom.
